[Division of Disease Surveillance]June 2, 2000Escherichia coli O157:H7 Infection: Ontario
An outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infection in southern Ontario has claimed 7 lives, 6 adults and one child, and hospitalized several others. The E. coli bacteria has infected nearly 600 people in the Walkerton area and over 200 have been seen at local area hospitals. On Friday May 19, the Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Public Health Unit was notified of 2 cases of bloody diarrhea referred from the Walkerton Hospital to Owen Sound Hospital. Shortly thereafter, the Public Health Laboratory reported that water samples from the town's water supply tested positive for E.coli O157:H7. Accordingly, the Health Unit issued a 'Boil Water Advisory' to the residents of Walkerton which still remains in effect. Although officials aren't yet sure how the outbreak started, it is possible that sewage might have leaked into local wells after extensive flooding in the area during a heavy rainstorm nearly two weeks ago.
